Trump warns halting Saudi arms sales would hurt economy

Britain is a close ally and trade partner of Saudi Arabia.

USA officials have not confirmed Turkish claims that Khashoggi, a United States resident and one of the more outspoken critics of the regime of King Salman and his son Prince Mohammed, had been lured to the consulate and murdered by a team of 15 government operatives sent by Riyadh to Istanbul.

The Times adds that "media reports have cited Turkish investigators as saying they believe he was killed soon after entering the building and his corpse cut to pieces and disposed of by an elite Saudi security team".

Trump made Saudi Arabia the first stop on his first foreign trip as president in May 2017, but in recent weeks has appeared to sour a bit on Riyadh, complaining directly to King Salman about the cost of American support for the Saudi military and for OPEC oil price increases.

The Washington Post, where Khashoggi had been a regular contributor over the past year, also demanded answers.

"When I hear of the arrest of a friend who did nothing that (deserved being) arrested, it makes me feel I shouldn't go", he told the BBC. "If they have the ability and also the audacity to go into another country and kill a journalist, these aren't the kind of people maybe that we want to be selling arms to", he said. Again it's an act that we can take without passing legislation.

While Turkish sources maintain their certainty of Khashoggi's assassination, with CCTV footage shows Khashoggi entering, but not leaving - social media has been filled with posts smearing Khashoggi and his fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, and blaming Turkey and Qatar for his disappearance. Saudi Arabia's de facto leader, Mohammed bin Salman, has done so many times.

Turkish, US and British intelligence sources have told press, privately, that Khashoggi was likely murdered at the consulate at the request of the Saudi leadership.

The user also labelled Cengiz as part of the "Qatar blockade gang", quoting tweets she had posted in support of the Gulf country after Saudi Arabia and allies severed diplomatic ties previous year.

New Climate Report Was Too Cautious, Some Scientists Say
But Trump, who has ignorantly called climate change a " hoax ", withdrew the United States from the pact. He has also vowed to increase the burning of coal by the country.

Saudi Journalist Killed, Dismembered at Consulate in Istanbul
The Saudi Consulate insists Khashoggi left its building, contradicting Turkish officials who say they believe he is still there. While Riyadh claimed he had left the consulate after his visit, Turkish police said Khashoggi did not emerge from the building.

No plans to fire Rod Rosenstein
White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said Trump and Rosenstein talked for about 45 minutesw on the way to Florida . Sessions said such agreements, known as consent decrees, are too restrictive on police officers. "No, I don't.

A former U.S. intelligence official said the details in the intercepts do not indicate any intention to harm Khashoggi.

"It's a very serious situation for us and this White House", Trump said.

He declined to comment on Khashoggi's possible fate, but said "we can not let this happen; to reporters, to anybody".

"We're monitoring this very closely, this situation very closely, and we are working closely with [the] State Department", Mattis said. According to some reports, Ankara is considering the options of recalling its ambassador from Riyadh and expelling the Saudi envoy if the Saudis fail to provide a satisfactory explanation on Khashoggi's fate "within several days".

Last week, the crown prince told Bloomberg News that his government was "very keen to know what happened to him", and that Mr Khashoggi had left "after a few minutes or one hour".

Trump also spoke about the disappearance while being interviewed on the Fox & Friends program on Thursday, saying the U.S.is being "very tough" as it looks into the case. "If this happened, if they murdered this journalist who works for The Washington Post in a consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, that's a game-changer for me".

Since 2009, the executive branch has notified Congress of proposed foreign military sales to Saudi Arabia of major defense articles and services with a potential aggregate value of almost $139 billion, according to a Congressional Research Service report.

Turkish authorities have privately said they believe Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, was killed inside the consulate.
