What can we expect when Storm Callum hits Edinburgh?

The Met Office has issued an amber weather alert from 6am on Friday to 6pm on Saturday for South Wales and is warning of hazardous conditions.

Forecasters have warned the storm could cause a "risk to life and property".

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Joanna Donnelly of Met Éireann said winds would be strongest in coastal areas.

Met Eireann this afternoon extended the weather warnings.

The warning comes into effect from 10pm tomorrow night and covers Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Kerry Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Cork and Waterford.

There'll also be some heavy and persistent rain falling onto fairly saturated ground after the rain that fell last weekend.

Widespread travel disruption and flooding is predicted across the country as conditions deteriorate from Thursday into Friday morning, with a series of Met Office weather warnings already in force.

In Galway, council crews are rolling out the city's aquadam ahead of potential high-tides of up to six metres.

There is also a yellow warning of heavy rainfall for the north of England and parts of Scotland on Saturday.

Wales and the North West could have the heaviest deluge.

"Certainly, we will have some localised flooding in the east, but the biggest problems will be in the south and west", Ms Cusack continued.

Natural Resources Wales' (NRW) have said they are sending out their emergency response teams to prepare for the storm, checking that flood defences are in good working order, clearing gulleys and ditches, and installing temporary defences.

Issued at 11:00am this morning, this warning will be valid from 11:00pm tomorrow night through to 9:00am on Friday morning.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has urged drivers to exercise extreme caution over the coming days.

Ms Donnelly said there would be a risk of flooding in places. Expect the unexpected. Watch out for falling/fallen debris on the road and vehicles veering across the road.
