Hamilton questions if Mercedes let title hurt strategy

"I didn't really have any problems but collectively as a team we didn't perform that great which is not something we usually do".

Hamilton, who will watch National Football League side Atlanta Falcons take on the New York Giants on Monday night, has asked to be kept in the loop of Mercedes' analysis by his race engineer, Pete Bonnington, before he heads south of the border.

"I had the inside line, but then Ricciardo didn't see me so we went side-by-side and then it was quite clear what happened", said Vettel as he laid the blame for the collision at the Red Bull man's door.

Raikkonen, who will leave Ferrari for Sauber at the end of the season, claimed the lead on the opening lap and rode his luck in a strategic and tactical race to claim the 21st victory of his career.

When asked by Autosport whether he was surprised not to have wrapped up the title after Vettel's mishap, Hamilton said: "Not surprised, I finished third". Wish there had been a few more laps in the end!

"I will get an email update from Bono and then we will sit down on Thursday in Mexico and go through it all". "We were on pole position, same straightforward approach going throughout the weekend but in strategy they were talking about different scenarios as we do every weekend but there's a different feeling, for sure, with the performance and decisions that were taken today as opposed to previous races but I don't think we needed to make any changes. It's been a great weekend and the vehicle has been pretty good all the time", said the 39-year-old Finn. "It just made it so hard for us to even compete today".

Hamilton looked on course to secure the title as he led with 19 laps remaining in Austin, but his soft tyres were unable to keep him in front and he was forced to pit for a second time late in the race - handing victory to Kimi Raikkonen.

Raikonnen, meanwhile, wins his first Grand Prix since 2013 in Australia - ended a run of 113 races without a win - while Hamilton and Vettel's battle will continue in Mexico where he needs to outscore the German by just five points.

"In my mind I was thinking, I've got these two guys ahead of me who just want to win a race".

Despite often promising much over the last couple of seasons, Ferrari have not been able to go the distance with Mercedes and yet again see their title aspirations in tatters.

"But we've had some incredible weekends this year and still to get a third, I'm still grateful for that - but naturally starting first and finishing third is never a good thing".
