Google sacks 48 people over sexual misconduct claims

The report is quoting two company executives with knowledge of the episode, though they have not be been named.

A spokesman for Rubin denied the allegations, the newspaper said. Rubin was awarded a $90 million exit package, according to the Times, and was publicly praised by Page when he left the company in 2014.

In a response to the story, Google said it had fired 48 employees in the past two years, including 13 senior executives, as a result of sexual harassment allegations, citing "an increasingly hard line" on inappropriate conduct.

"This year to date, we have added over 9,000 new employees in the U.S.", Pichai said in a call with analysts on Thursday coinciding with fiscal third quarter earnings report for Google parent company Alphabet. This helped Rubin invest millions of dollars in his next venture. It's not clear if anyone on the board knew about the investigation at the time.

His ex-wife, Rie Rubin, claims in a civil suit that Rubin had so-called "ownership relationships" with women. "Being owned is kinda like you are my property, and I can loan you to other people", he said in the email, reported the Times. Rubin's alleged misdeeds were first reported in November 2017.

Google's co-founder Larry Page had then asked Rubin for his resignation, according to the report. "Specifically, I never coerced a woman to have sex in a hotel room".

Later, Rubin tweeted that the story was a "smear campaign".

On Friday, an explosive report detailed how the tech giant handed out $90 million exit package to one of its top executives- Andy Rubin - even though he was leaving the company following sexual misconduct allegations. The company, which is motivated to avoid wrongful termination lawsuits and scrutiny into its handling of any misconduct, usually gives high-level employees a much larger parachute than departing rank and file. It also highlighted Google's inability to fairly enforce rules regarding workplace relationships. In 2011, he had a consensual relationship with a woman on the Android team who did not report to him, they said.

In 2013, Richard DeVaul, one of the directors for Google's moonshot division X, invited job interviewee Star Simpson to arts festival Burning Man. She relented to a neck rub because, "I didn't have enough spine or backbone to shut that down as a 24-year-old", she said. According to anonymous sources familiar with the matter, Rubin was actually forced to resign after having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a female subordinate on the Google Android team. She was also asked to keep quiet about what happened. In a statement to the Times, he apologized for an "error of judgment".

In another case dating back to 2007, Jennifer Blakely, who worked as a senior contract manager in the company's legal department, was transferred to sales after she and David Drummond, who joined as general counsel in 2002, disclosed their relationship to the company when they had a son the same year.

A Google investigation found the woman's complaint credible, the Times reported.
