Jewish Doctor, Nurses Tended to Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooter’s Injuries

When President Donald Trump visits Pittsburgh Tuesday, he'll be faced with the tough task of balancing the traditional presidential duty to comfort and unite the country following the deadly synagogue shooting with his instinct to rip into his political foes and the press.

Less than 2 miles away, hundreds of mourners dressed mostly in black converged on the city's oldest and largest synagogue, Rodef Shalom, for the funeral of Cecil and David Rosenthal, intellectually disabled brothers in their 50s.

"I'm just going to pay my respects".

Cohen, who lives in the area and heard gunfire from his house, was one of the first responders on the scene.

"The president cherishes the American Jewish community for everything it stands for", Sanders said, choking up as she noted that Trump "is the grandfather of several Jewish grandchildren" born to daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Nicole Watson, who attended the protest, said that despite her politics, she appreciated the magnitude of Trump's visit.

"The president of the United States is always welcome", the rabbi said Monday.

Ignoring the requests of the city's mayor, the feelings of a mourning family, and statements from the targeted Jewish community, President Trump is barging into the city of Pittsburgh like the Kool-Aid Man.

In an open letter published by the Pittsburgh steering committee for Bend The Arc, a national group representing progressive Jewish voices, leaders blamed Trump and his rhetoric for the massacre.

"Bigots are coming out of the woodwork", he said.

The letter was signed by the group's Pittsburgh steering committee and almost 43,000 members of the public, Bend the Arc said. "I don't know. I think some of it comes from the actions of the people around me", Cohen said.

When Air Force One touched down at the airport outside Pittsburgh, the Trumps were not greeted by the usual phalanx of local officials that typically welcomes a visiting president, a reflection of controversy surrounding the visit.

Just minutes before the synagogue attack, the shooter apparently used social media to rage against HIAS, a Jewish organization that resettles refugees under contract with the US government. "I'm an advocate for concealed carry in things like this and maybe that's what the Jewish community needs to do".

Jewish leaders in Pittsburgh, however, said Trump isn't welcome unless he stops targeting minorities and denounces white nationalism. The media, she said, has "a huge responsibility to play in the divisive nature of the country".

Myers said he has no plans to meet with President Donald Trump, who is planning to visit the city later Tuesday, but has received hate-filled backlash for saying the president is welcome at his synagogue.
