Russian Soyuz Rocket Failure Caused By Damaged Sensor, Reveals Probe

Officials believe the sensor's failure caused a booster rocket from the first stage to malfunction and hit a fuel tank, which led to the loss of stabilisation and the emergency landing.

Russian Federation hopes to launch three crew for the International Space Station on December 3, the first manned blast-off since an accident this month, the Roscosmos space agency said Wednesday.

The Soyuz-FG rocket carrying a NASA astronaut and a Roscosmos cosmonaut failed two minutes into the October 11 flight, sending their emergency capsule into a sharp fall back to Earth.

The two men landed safely on a steppe in Kazakhstan; the incident is the first of its kind for Russia's manned programme in over three decades.

"The reason for the abnormal separation. was due to a deformation of the stem of the contact separation sensor", chief investigator Igor Skorobogatov told reporters.

Russian space agency Roscosmos aired footage filmed by an onboard camera, showing the Soyuz blasting off and climbing normally until three of its booster rockets detach, with one of them appearing to fall inwards, rather than away from it.

Svitolina overcomes Bertens in gruelling WTA semi
A stunned Stephens lost the opening eight games before turning things around to win 12 of the next 15. The title at the WTA Finals was for Elina's fourth of the season and 13th in his career.

The failure occurred about 2 minutes after liftoff from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, when one of the Soyuz's four strap-on boosters (the one known as Block D) failed to separate properly and instead slammed into the rocket's core stage.

Russia, the only country able to ferry astronauts to the orbiting science lab, suspended all launches after a rocket failed on October 11 just minutes after blast-off -the first such incident in the history of post-Soviet space travel. He said additional checks were being introduced into the rocket assembly process.

Roscosmos officials on Wednesday met with their counterparts from NASA to give them a full briefing on the malfunction, Roscosmos director general Dmitry Rogozin said Thursday.

Three crewmembers will launch toward the International Space Station (ISS) atop a Soyuz on December 3, Russian space officials announced today (Nov. 1).

Russian Federation is the only country now able to send astronauts to the International Space Station, and the accident caused it to suspend all launches until getting to the bottom of the rare failed manned launch. They have been driven to do this because, at present, the Soyuz spacecraft is the only means by which NASA, Russia, and their worldwide partners have of getting people to and from the station.
