Google employees stage walkouts to protest treatment of women in NY, DC

In an email sent last week, Mr Pichai and Eileen Naughton, Google's executive in charge of personnel issues, sought to reassure employees that the company had cracked down on sexual misconduct since Mr Rubin's departure four years ago.

Getty Editorial Google employees at its European headquarters in Dublin join others around the world in walking out of their offices in protest over claims of sexual harassment, gender inequality and systemic racism at the tech giant. Perhaps the most egregious case involved Andy Rubin, creator of the Android mobile software, who was given a $90 million exit package after the company verified a sexual assault claim against him.

However, Rubin denied the allegations this month and slammed New York Times on Twitter for containing "inaccuracies about my employment at Google and wild exaggerations about my compensation".

"Employees have raised constructive ideas for how we can improve our policies and our processes going forward", he said.

Mass employee walkouts. Leaks about an effort to get back into China. Some held larger signs than those at the Google office, with more confrontational messages including "Time's up Tech". "None of these individuals received an exit package".

In it, the organisers said "there are thousands of us, at every level of the company".

Over a thousand people appear to have joined the Google workers' walkout in NY.

The walkouts started in Asia, spreading across the globe with planned protests expected to start at 11:10 a.m.in each time zone. The company told its employees it had fired 48 people over sexual misconduct allegations over the last two years, and none of them were given packages.

Soon after the article was published, another executive, Richard DeVaul, resigned amid allegations of making unwanted advances toward a woman he was looking to employ.

They also want Google to commit to ending pay inequity and to create a publicly disclosed sexual harassment transparency report and a clearer process for reporting complaints.

Over the past week, Pichai and Larry Page, co-founder of Google and CEO of its parent company Alphabet, "have taken several steps to calm its agitated 94,000-person workforce".
