DeSantis denied there was any racial innuendo in his remark, but race - and allegations that DeSantis was using it against his opponent - were never far off during the 10-week general election sprint. When DeSantis was asked about the Horowitz conferences during an October debate, his angry reaction created one of the campaign's viral moments. "The fact that he was willing to come two times made a big difference". With 99% of the vote tallied, MSNBC imagined that Gillum had secured 49.4% of the vote over Republican Ron DeSantis's 48.8%.

As George W. Bush, Al Gore and the world discovered in 2000, it's a short step from there to raucous demonstrations at courthouses, and chants of "Count every vote!" And while Democrats despise the president, Republicans love him. The tweet included a link to an article about an unknown number of outstanding votes in Democratic-stronghold Broward County.

The Democratic nominee is Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum.

Gillum portrayed DeSantis as racially divisive, repeatedly pointing out his "monkey this up" comment and noting that a major DeSantis contributor called former President Barack Obama the N-word on Twitter and DeSantis refused to return his money. But Democrat Christine Hallquist lost her bid to become the first openly transgender USA governor in Vermont, where Republican incumbent Phil Scott won re-election.

Palm Beach County officials, however, had yet to counted mail-in or provisional ballots, according to the Florida Division of Elections website.

In Michigan, Democrat Gretchen Whitmer turned back Republican Bill Schuette in the contest to replace Republican Governor Rick Snyder, who could not run again due to term limits. Despite implications that DeSantis was racially insensitive - an idea he angrily disputed during a debate - he was able to win the state that Trump carried in 2016. With all votes counted, Mr Scott had 50.2 per cent of the vote, a lead of 0.4 per cent.

Florida's electoral map, like America's, is overwhelmingly red, even in almost tied elections.

In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis became the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a US state.

While Scott maintains he has won the race, the Nelson campaign believes a recount could change the outcome of the race and re-elect Nelson. Outside of Florida's urban centers, Republicans dominated.

"What Bill Nelson is saying is just a desperate attempt by a career politician trying to hold on to power", Ingoglia, a member of the Florida House of Representatives, told Kate Bouldan on CNN. "We're going to fight", he said.

By 2 p.m., Gillum gained on DeSantis by another 4,441 votes, and now trails by only 0.47 percent.

Although the Republican candidate was declared the victor on Tuesday night, the governor's race in Florida appears close to a recount.

But Republicans amped up their turnout even more, Corrigan said. In the end, they did not tilt the race to Gillum like polls suggested they would.

In other parts of the country, race and gender barriers were overcome as Native American and Muslim candidates won congressional elections.
