NRL star Jarryd Hayne hands himself into police over rape allegation

The out-of-contract NRL star handed himself in to police on Monday afternoon after a sexual assault allegation was made by a woman who, according to reports, alleged she suffered injuries during an initially consensual sexual encounter with Hayne in the Hunter Valley on September 30.

He has not yet spoken publicly about the claims. The alleged victim said she and some friends met Hayne and his friends at a bar.

Hayne went to the Sydney police station with his lawyer after the alleged victim, a woman in her 20s, was interviewed by investigators last week, commercial broadcaster Channel Ten reported.

'Police will allege in court that the man attended a home in the Hunter region on Sunday 30 September 2018, and sexually assaulted a 26-year-old woman.

It is understood the time Hayne spent at the police station on Monday night was taken up by a lengthy bail determination consideration, with independent police officers assessing his release.

He also created headlines when he left the Eels to play in the National Football League, running out for the San Francisco 49ers in late 2015. He has denied these allegations.

"I am not going to speculate about Jarryd because it is before the courts". Parramatta had hoped to offer him a new deal for 2019 but were unable to do so because only $200,000 remained in their salary cap.

The St George Illawarra Dragons had also been scouting Hayne, but are also likely to withdraw their interest.
