Government and DUP will 'sort out' Irish border dispute, Chancellor claims

She again warned that her party would "review" the arrangement if the Brexit deal gained parliamentary support, but she stopped short of saying she would definitely end the relationship with the Tories in those circumstances.

"Indeed if you read the Withdrawal Agreement you can see that we are witnessing the birth of a new country called Ukni", he said.

The DUP leader already said on a few occasions that her party will object the withdrawal agreement and the political declaration signed with the European Union, despite a "confidence and supply" pact with leading Conservative Party.

And as she travelled to Wales and Northern Ireland, promising that her Brexit plans would strengthen "every corner" of the United Kingdom, she came under fire from Mrs Foster, whose party has a parliamentary pact to support the Conservative government in key votes.

"Unless we junk this backstop, we will find that Brussels has got us exactly where they want us - a satellite state".

The backstop is created to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland post-Brexit.

During her trip, Mrs May denied she had given up and stated her deal "protects the interests" of Northern Ireland.

In an interview in The Times yesterday, Foster said: "If people [in Northern Ireland] are looking to Dublin for representation in Europe because we're the subject of EU rules, that is so risky in terms of the Union".

"I really do understand that she is a unionist, that she wants to get the best deal, but actually what this deal does is go against everything she has said around all of that".

Arlene Foster's party is showing little sign of relenting from its position that the deal can not be approved unless the so-called "backstop" is dropped.

She said the party would work hard to "make amends" and seek to regain the support and trust of those who were "upset" by the revelations around the scandal.

Mrs May's Belfast visit comes as US President Donald Trump last night said the withdrawal treaty could hamper trade deals between the United Kingdom and the US - something which Downing Street denied.

In an attempt to perhaps build both metaphorical and literal bridges post-Brexit, Johnson also reiterated an earlier dream to have a bridge built connecting NI with Scotland.

Meanwhile, former defence secretary Sir Michael Fallon told the BBC the deal was "doomed" and must be renegotiated.

The party's leader, Arlene Foster, flatly reiterated the DUP's opposition to the deal "as it now stands", telling May to "stop wasting time" and seek a better one, while also warning of the consequences if she did not.

"So, unless the House of Commons can be persuaded somehow that those are possible, then I think, yes, the deal is doomed".

"If you look at the political declaration which sets out the future framework for our relationship with the European Union, it clearly identifies that we will have an independent trade policy and we will be able to do trade deals, negotiate trade deals with countries around the rest of the world", May said, speaking to Sky News.

He said: "It's no use us just brushing that off, saying "No, no, we can do a deal with America"; he's the President of the United States, and if he says it's going to be hard, then it certainly looks like it's going to be hard".

"So we need to look at how we can provide reassurance about how we will use the options that the agreement gives us".

Meanwhile Sinn Féin leader Mary McDonald has said her party's seven votes at Westminster "will hardly be the deciding factor" for passing the Brexit deal.
