Military buildup underway on both sides of Russia-Ukraine border

Moscow's announcement about new missiles follows its seizure of three Ukrainian naval vessels and their crews on Sunday over what it said was their illegal entry into Russian waters, something Ukraine denies.

Moscow will soon deploy more of its advanced S-400 air defence systems in Crimea, a military official said.

"The United States government has taken a very strong position in their support in support of Ukraine", said State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

Faced with what he says is mounting evidence that Russian Federation could be preparing a full-scale invasion of eastern Ukraine, including what Ukrainian intelligence reports show as a buildup of troops, planes and tanks at the Ukrainian border, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko said he was relying on Trump to deliver a message to Putin, from him, at the G20 summit. "It is an excuse to introduce martial law in Ukraine", RIA Novosti cites the president.

The Russian leader also defended the border guards, who stopped the Ukrainian ships from passing through the Kerch Strait, saying it was their duty as sworn service members to do so and that if they failed they could face a tribunal for defying an order.

National Security adviser John Bolton said Mr. Trump will also be meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Argentine President Mauricio Macri, South Korea's Moon Jae-in, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

President Proeshenko has claimed Russia's military activity and tank deployments have "dramatically increased" along Ukraine's borders.

The US State Department on Tuesday termed Russia's actions "a unsafe escalation" and said Washington wants to see "our European allies doing more to assist Ukraine".

Ukrainian president warns of threat of 'full-scale war' with Russia

In Ukraine, Poroshenko warned that the clash at sea could herald more drastic developments in the simmering Ukraine-Russia military standoff.

Austria, which now holds the rotating European Union presidency, has said the bloc will consider further sanctions against the Kremlin at an upcoming meeting.

The Ukrainian parliament late on Monday, November 26, voted in favor of Poroshenko's request for the introduction of martial law in border areas for 30 days.

Russia's military said Wednesday it is adding more anti-aircraft missiles to its defense systems in the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula.

The warning from Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, came ahead of the two leaders' high-stakes sit-down on Saturday evening.

"Maybe I won't even have the meeting", Trump told the Washington Post.

"Perhaps we can break through in Buenos Aires or not", he said.
