His final resting place is alongside wife Barbara Bush and daughter Robin, who died of leukemia at age 3.

Thursday's flavour was distinctly Texan.

A Connecticut Yankee from a wealthy family who moved to Texas to be an oilman, Bush has been eulogized as a president with a keen sense of civility and duty. "President Bush worked selflessly throughout his long life to bring about a world of justice and lasting peace".

President Donald Trump and George P. Bush's father, Jeb, engaged in a vitriolic primary rivalry during the 2016 campaign, and Trump has mocked and criticized the legacies of both Presidents Bush. Pence said there was a kindness about Bush "that was evident to everyone who ever met him".

There were rousing renditions of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Onward Christian Soldiers", but also many of Bush's country favourites.

Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys says Bush had personally requested that the group sing "Amazing Grace" at his funeral.

The church's pastor, Rev. Russell Levenson Jr., recalled the Bushes regularly attending services there and offering to give up their seats to others when the church was particularly crowded. Bush enrolled at Yale University after military service, becoming a scholar-athlete and captaining the baseball team to two College World Series before graduating Phi Beta Kappa after just 2½ years.

President George H.W Bush got Sully, a yellow lab service dog, in June, shortly after first lady Barbara Bush died.

Ahead of Wednesday's state funeral - where Trump will reportedly sit in the front row, but not deliver a eulogy - the president tweeted he would visit the "wonderful Bush family" at the presidential guest residence Blair House across from the White House.

Mr Bush's death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents' club to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
