Prosecutors Recommend 'Substantial' Prison Time for Michael Cohen Despite His Assistance

John Dean, a White House counsel under President Richard Nixon who received jail time for his role in the Watergate scandal, said Friday that allegations against President Donald Trump detailed in new court filings give Congress "little choice" other than to begin impeachment proceedings.

The memo said while prosecutors agree that Cohen should receive credit for his assistance with the special counsel's office, since he chose not to be a formal cooperating witness, he would only get a modest reduction in sentence.

Mueller's memo is not giving a specific sentencing recommendation, but because Cohen is being cooperative and has accepted responsibility for his lies, his office is requesting that any prison time for which he might be sentenced for misleading Congress be run concurrently with the sentences he gets for his fraud and campaign violation plea bargain with the NY office.

He said Trump had directed him before the 2016 election to arrange payments to buy the silence of porn actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, both of whom alleged they had affairs with Trump.

The sentencing memo described information Cohen had provided since abandoning Trump and assisting with the government's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. election and possible collusion with Trump's team.

The memo was harsh on Cohen's payoffs of the two women, and sought to tie them to Trump's win, arguing that Cohen "coordinated" with the Trump campaign.

Prosecutors urged Pauley to hit Cohen with a $500,000 fine and forfeit his assets in addition to the prison sentence. He also provided information about attempts by Russian nationals to reach Trump's campaign, they said. In doing so, they'll have to provide a federal judge with at least some description of the assistance he's provided to their investigations - the Russian Federation probe and a separate investigation led by the USA attorney's office in Manhattan.

They said his sentence should reflect a "modest" reduction from the four to five years they said federal guidelines would suggest. Federal prosecutors said Friday that Cohen deserves a substantial prison sentence despite his cooperation with investigators.

Soon after, Trump praised Roger Stone , a political operative who cut his teeth directing shady operations during the 1972 Nixon campaign.

Trump says his campaign had nothing to do with them and he denounces Mueller's investigation as a "hoax" and a "witch hunt".

Court filings from prosecutors in NY and special counsel Robert Mueller's office Friday laid out previously undisclosed contacts between Trump associates and Russian intermediaries and suggested the Kremlin aimed early on to influence Trump and his campaign by playing to both his political aspirations and his personal business interests.

They also suggest Trump and his family were in the loop on discussions with Russians on a Moscow project, even after the real estate tycoon secured the Republican nomination in mid-2016.

In an additional filing Friday evening, prosecutors said former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort lied to them about his contacts with a Russian associate and Trump administration officials. "But Cohen's description of those efforts is overstated in some respects and incomplete in others".

US Attorney Robert Khuzami accused the 52-year-old, who once vowed to take a bullet for the president, of being motivated by "personal greed" and of "repeatedly" using his power and influence for "deceptive ends".

The meeting didn't take place. The Manhattan prosecutors' charges against Cohen stemmed from a referral from Mueller's team.
