Pompeo to Netanyahu: US still committed to protecting Israel

BRASILIA-Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as Brazil's president on January 1, and immediately called on Congress to combat endemic corruption and promised to "work tirelessly so that Brazil reaches its destiny".

With Bolsonaro's inauguration, Latin America's two biggest economies are now in the hands of anti-establishment populists.

Even before being sworn in, Bolsonaro tweeted he would issue a decree easing gun laws to let "good" citizens own firearms to counter armed criminals - a measure opposed by 61 percent of Brazilians, according to a Datafolha survey.

He said Brazil's president-elect Jair Bolsonaro assured him of the move in a meeting.

The Israeli leader, in Brazil for Bolsonaro's inauguration on Tuesday, spoke in Rio de Janiero.

His promise to extend immunity to security forces who use lethal force against suspected wrongdoers has also sparked unease in a country where about 5,000 people a year are already killed by police.

But his right-wing politics have made others in Brazil nervous.

"Bolsonaro told me it was "when, not if" he moves the embassy to Jerusalem", Netanyahu said on Sunday during a meeting with leaders of Brazil's Jewish community in Rio de Janeiro.

Mr Netanyahu said he would not step down in the event of being summoned for a hearing by the prosecutor general before the elections, a necessary step ahead of being formally charged.

Bolsonaro has already said he will do all he can to challenge the leftist governments of Venezuela and Cuba.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Brazil's President-elect Jair Bolsonaro told him it was a matter of "when, not if" he moves his country's embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. And President Bolsonaro will move the embassy as well. "There are hundreds of bureaucratic governing bodies across Brazil, of regulators as well".

Brazil has also withdrawn an offer to host this year's United Nations summit on climate change, and its new agriculture minister has referred to Brazil's environmental protection agency as an "industry of fines".

Days after being elected, he picked Brazil's most famous anti-corruption judge, Sergio Moro, as his minister of justice.

Bolsonaro's path to the presidency was almost cut short in September when he was stabbed in a knife attack while on the campaign trail.

Iraq's prime minister said on Sunday that security officials from Baghdad had met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, and hinted at a bigger Iraqi role fighting Islamic State militants as USA troops withdraw.
