Slightly Mad devs to make VR-ready rival to Xbox and PlayStation

The CEO of the Project CARS studio, Slightly Mad Studios, announced a new console named the "Mad Box" on Wednesday and claimed that it was "the most powerful console ever built".

In a slightly weird move, the developer of racing sim Project CARS Slightly Mad has announced that it is making a new console called the Mad Box. Yes, you read that right, according to reports, the upcoming gaming console is being developed by Slightly Mad Studios, and according to the company, it will be a beast of a console.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Bell further detailed that "it will support most major VR headsets and those upcoming and the specs will be equivalent to a "very fast PC 2 years from now".

Following the introduction of Microsoft's Xbox in 2001, the game console landscape hasn't seen much change in way of new competition. "You have it", the founder wrote on Twitter, then clarifying the Mad Box hits 60FPS per eye.

What is the Mad Box? But if Slightly Mad can deliver a new console to market that incorporates all the modern bells and whistles at an affordable price, it will certainly turn some heads.

At the same time, however, Slightly Mad will offer their proprietary games engine to developers for free. Slightly Mad Studios already has investors inquiring about providing the capital to bring the device to fruition, but no deals have been made. His company's vision of the console plans to support 4K gaming and the capability to display modern VR games (and really, any other games) at a smooth 120 frames per second.

It will be interesting to see how close the Mad Box gets to the PS5 and next Xbox in terms of specifications.

"We think the industry is a little too much of a monopoly or a micro oligopoly", Bell said to Variety Gaming.

"Prices will drop with ship quantity but we're not planning on taking as large a cut as other console owners to enable us to cut prices massively", said Bell. There's a long way to go between announcement and release for the Mad Box, and during that time, and there's the potential for plenty to go wrong in that time.
