Malaysia’s monarch abdicates the throne

It is the fist time a ruling monarch has abdicated before the end of a five-year term since Malaysia gained its independence from Britain in 1957.

It follows weeks of speculation after the royal took medical leave, followed by online rumours and pictures purported to show him marrying a former Miss Moscow in Russian Federation.

The news of his resignation, which became known late Sunday evening received a myriad of reactions, expression of affection and the highest appreciation for the service of Sultan Muhammad V during his reign as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

In a statement, the palace said the king was grateful for the opportunity.

Under the rotation system, the next in line to the throne is Pahang's Sultan Ahmad Shah, followed by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar of Johor, and Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak, according to Free Malaysia Today.

The palace statement said the king was grateful for the opportunity given to him by the Council of Rulers and thanked the prime minister and government.

While the position is mostly ceremonial, it holds special discretionary powers, including swearing in the prime minister and pardoning convicts.

The South China Morning Post saw a "game of thrones" getting underway in Malaysia as the Conference of Rulers, a body comprised of the nine eligible candidates for the crown plus a few non-voting provincial governors, meets to decide who the next king will be.
