For the First Time Since 1989, There Won't Be an Oscar Host

The Academy still doesn't have a host for the 2019 Oscars ceremony (airing on February 24) after Kevin Hart backed out following backlash over his past homophobic tweets.

Hart was named as host of the 2019 Academy Awards show on December 4th of a year ago but stepped down amid the controversy of homophobic jokes.

Speaking to Michael Strahan on Good Morning America, the Night School actor said: "It's hard to predict what can happen". The latter apology caused severe criticism, with many calling out the talk show host for defending Hart and vouching for him to still host the Oscars. "There's no more conversation about it".

"The people who produce that show are hogtied by the Academy, who as a group are not willing to change very much", an awards show and live events producer anonymously told the outlet.

"I'm not taking anything away from actors", he added, "but I don't know that we need to be that celebratory, that's the biggest celebration on Earth, and it's just about people who are pretending and wearing makeup". "I'm a good person, I love to love, if you don't see that then it's a problem with you". You can see that embarrassment on the faces of almost every celebrity who appears in the crowd in that video. "It's his choice as an American. then you can feel about it however you want".

A source told PEOPLE at the time that The Academy was considering bringing Hart back as host.

The last time the Oscars went hostless, they opened with a musical number in which Rob Lowe sang with Snow White.
