Woman dies after getting trapped in clothing donation bin

A woman has died after falling into a clothing donation bin.

A 35-year-old woman has died after being pinned inside a clothing donation box in Toronto on Tuesday morning.

Paramedics performed CPR after the woman was discovered unconscious but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

B'nai Brith, operator of the bin involved in Tuesday's deadly incident, did not indicate whether it plans to revamp donation boxes but described the woman's death as "terrible and tragic". "I think they should have left him in there, personally", one East Vancouverite told a CTV news crew after a man in his 20s became trapped inside the main compartment of a bin for the Developmental Disabilities Association.

Ray Taheri, an engineering professor at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus, said homeless people or those in need will often to try to pull themselves inside of the bins to reach the contents inside or to shelter themselves for warmth.

Another friend said it's not uncommon for homeless people to search through donation bins to find warm clothes.

"I think the precedent that has been established in Vancouver and elsewhere will help us to get to get to a conclusion on this fairly rapidly". "Too many of our guests who would otherwise have a shot at turning their lives around are dying a terrible death inside or hanging out of a bin".

Ever since, Canada has not managed to go more than a few months without someone being fatally injured by a clothing bin, with countless more instances of people having to be rescued.

How to prevent future deaths?

The spate of deaths has led some to call for the bins to be redesigned or removed.

The incident led to Inclusion BC deciding to remove its 146 bins placed in Greater Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Sunshine Coast, the Interior, and Vancouver Island.

Despite their good intentions, Taheri said he doesn't believe removing the bins is the best solution.

In New Westminster, staff say no one has made a request to the city to look into the issue of donation bins. "But on private property we don't know whether they are unattended". But they can also trap someone leaning in too far. He estimates it would cost almost $1 million to remove the approximately 2,000 donation bins in B.C. alone.

One manufacturer said it has stopped producing the bins while it develops safer designs.
