Desantis Replacing Sheriff Scott Israel Over Parkland

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, who faced criticism over his department's response to the deadly Parkland, Florida, school shooting past year, was officially suspended by new Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday. In the days after the carnage, reports revealed how the Broward County Sheriff's Office ignored several red flags, and were guilty of several missteps during the actual shooting.

Governor Ron DeSantis made the announcement att the Broward Sheriff's Office headquarters just after 4:30 p.m. was joined by Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez and Attorney General Ashley Moody.

In his press conference today, DeSantis said, "The neglect of duty and the incompetence that was connected to the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has been well-documented, and I have no interest in dancing on Scott Israel's political grave".

"DeSantis also cited the Broward County sheriff's response to a 2017 mass shooting at Fort Lauderdale International Airport". Despite reports and investigations showing numerous flaws that led to more deaths at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018, Israel proclaimed his suspension was "about politics".

Israel countered that other mass shootings did not result in the suspension of top law enforcement officials, including the bloodbath in 2016 in Orlando at the Pulse nightclub.

Hixon said the inaction by multiple deputies when shots were being fired in a school building as a sign of a failure of leadership. Aside from court challenges, Israel has the right to challenge his suspension before the Florida Senate, which would hold a trial to uphold his dismissal or overturn it.

The Miami Herald and South Florida Sun-Sentinel had recently reported that Israel told his staff he expected to be removed.
