FBI probed whether Trump secretly worked for Russia

"This is it!" Trump wrote in a series of tweets which began at 7:05am EST. He did not refute the Times' reporting but instead went after the integrity of the nation's main federal law enforcement agency.

Trump's first reaction to the report came in Saturday morning tweets where he said former FBI leaders opened an investigation on him "for no reason & with no proof" and that his firing of Comey was "a great day for America".

Mr Mueller was appointed within days of Mr Comey's firing.

The criminal aspect concerned the president's sacking of Mr Comey, and whether it was an obstruction of justice.

The timing of the investigation raises questions as both Comey and FBI lawyer Lisa Page told House investigators previous year that by the time the FBI director was sacked and special counsel appointed, there was no hard evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. "In the face of those lies, a whole lot of good people... believe that nonsense", Comey told reporters in the halls of the US Senate on December 17. "I admire the heck out of the man, but I don't know his phone number, I've never been to his house, I don't know his children's names", he said to members of the House.

Mr. Mueller kicked Ms. Page and Mr. Strzok off this team after viewing their text messages.

Broncos hire Bears DC Vic Fangio as new head coach, reports say
Former 49ers and Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has agreed to become the next Denver Broncos head coach. Kubiak coach the Broncos for two seasons and led them to the Super Bowl 50 championship three years ago.

"This is absurd", Sanders said.

"Counterintelligence investigators had to consider whether the president's own actions constituted a possible threat to national security", the New York Times report said. "And in fact, when I chose to just do it, I said to myself - I said, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story".

The paper's report cited unnamed former law enforcement officials, "others familiar with the investigation", and the congressional testimony of former FBI general counsel James. "There would have to be wide agreement to move forward on this". "And I think it's important for America and everybody as a whole to get to the bottom of this so we can move forward as a country".

The Times says it is unclear whether Mr Mueller is still pursuing the counterintelligence angle.

During the campaign, Trump repeatedly refused to criticize Putin, and in a July 2016 news conference he called on Russian Federation to hack his opponent Hillary Clinton's emails.

John Dowd, the president's attorney on special counsel matters, said the Times story is "an unwitting disclosure and verification of the utter corruption of their oaths by Comey and his colleagues to undermine the free election of the President of the United States". Trump frequently says the United States would be better off if it got along better with Russian Federation - and that position, right or wrong, is certainly not criminally suspect. "I fully expect that someday we will have good relations with Russian Federation again!" he tweeted. Mnuchin gave a closed-door briefing to lawmakers on Thursday.
