Baseball Legend Frank Robinson Dies At 83

Frank Robinson was one of the most prominent figures in the history of Major League Baseball, being the first African-American manager. But by 1965, despite hitting 33 home runs and driving in 113 runs, Red's management considered him old and expendable. The National League, originally founded in 1876, consists of the following teams: Arizona Diamondbacks; Atlanta Braves; Chicago Cubs; Cincinnati Reds; Colorado Rockies; Los Angeles Dodgers; Miami Marlins; Milwaukee Brewers; New York Mets; Philadelphia Phillies; Pittsburgh Pirates; San Diego Padres; San Francisco Giants; St. Louis Cardinals; and Washington Nationals.

Born in Beaumont, Texas, Robinson was raised in west Oakland where he attended McClymonds High School along with future NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell. And he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005. As a member of the Reds, he was the 1961 National League MVP.

A paragon of consistency, Robinson's worst seasons were the stuff of dreams for most Major League Baseball players.

There is a statue of Robinson outside the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.

He was the first player to win MVP awards in both leagues and the first African-American manager in MLB.

"Frank Robinson might have been the best I ever saw at turning his anger into runs".

"As a rule, I'm reluctant to express admiration for hitters, but I make an exception for Frank Robinson", Gibson wrote.

That December, Robinson was the centerpiece in what would ultimately be one of the most lopsided trades in baseball history, going to Baltimore for pitchers Milt Pappas and Jack Baldschun and outfielder Dick Simpson. Yet, here he is, dissecting a day nearly 13 years ago, an afternoon contest with the Astros at RFK Stadium that was one of the most memorable managerial moments of Frank Robinson's career.

Robinson also led the Orioles to another World Series title in 1970.

Robinson, who led the AL with a.316 average, 47 home runs and 122 runs batted in, was the first Triple Crown victor since 1947.

Robinson had coached for the Orioles and worked in their front office when he became their manager in 1988 after the team opened at 0-6.

All told, Robinson was an All-Star in five of his six seasons with Baltimore, reaching the World Series four times and batting.300 with 179 home runs.

"I remember the first game I ever managed [for Baltimore] in 1968".

Robinson also was outspoken about white pitchers not being openly rebuked for throwing at black batters.

"It's not LeCroy's fault", Robinson said.

While Robinson was fiery on the field, he was even more so off it as he fought for civil rights for much of his playing career especially once he moved to Baltimore. "After that, I was treated just like everybody else".

Robinson is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann, and two children, Frank Kevin and Nichelle.
