Rouhani: Iran to continue expanding military might, missile work

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told Iranians they should resist a "conspiracy" involving Washington. Marchers walked down the street chanting, "Death to Israel".

On Monday, Iran celebrated the 40th anniversary of the country's Islamic Revolution, during which US-backed ruler Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi was ousted and revolutionaries led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini took power in Tehran.

Iran's president on Monday insisted "enemy" plots against the country would fail as vast crowds marked 40 years since the Islamic revolution at a time of heightened tensions with the United States.

"Our missiles can travel very far, and confront any enemy, including the Iranian proxies in our region", he said from the base in Haifa, a day after an top Iranian commander threatened to raze the city if the United States attacked the Islamic Republic.

The regime also declared a mass amnesty, with a fifth of prisoners set to leave the country's overcrowded prison system.

Rouhani also vowed Iran would defeat USA sanctions, reimposed after President Donald Trump withdrew from Tehran's nuclear accord with world powers past year.

In the backdrop to Monday's marches, the military displayed Iranian-made missiles, which authorities showcase every year during anniversary celebrations.

The 35-year-old argues Maduro was re-elected last year in a sham vote and the country must hold new presidential elections. Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro said on Friday that he would not allow "fake" humanitarian aid to enter the country.

Elsewhere, the head of the elite Quds Force of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, attended the rally in the southern city of Kerman.

"The Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties (due to the sanctions) but we will overcome the problems by helping each other", Rouhani said.

Current supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is set to publish "a detailed statement explaining the "second step" of the progress of the Islamic revolution", his official website said. "I don't think you'll have many more anniversaries to enjoy", Bolton said. "It has been moving forward over the past 40 years and making Iran stronger". As The Times of Israel notes, "t$3 op political and military leaders in Iran regularly call for Israel's annihilation", so Javani's paean to his regime's genocidal ambitions is not at all unprecedented.

"I am very impressed by the strength of the navy", he said, calling it a "primary component" of Israel's defensive and deterrent capabilities.

Iranian state TV anchor Mehdi Khosravi chirped how he expects John Bolton, U.S. national security adviser, to be very angry on Monday since he had once predicted that Iranians will not see the 40th anniversary of their revolution.

"Iran has changed from a backward nation to a world power", said the 50-year-old.
