Saudi Arabia pursuing justice for #JamalKhashoggi murder, says rights official

Al-Aiban described the murder as an "unfortunate accident".

Turkey requested a red notice for 18 suspects November 15 and another two December 21, the ministry said on Twitter.

The public prosecutor is seeking the death penalty for five of them.

Saudi Arabia says those responsible for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi have been brought to justice.

On Thursday, Aiban said the suspects had faced three hearings so far in Saudi Arabia with their lawyers present. He gave no names or other details.

Aiban also rejected any outside probes into what happened to Khashoggi.

"Justice in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia operates pursuant to worldwide law and it does so in all transparency, " al-Aiban told the forum, right before adding that the Kingdom would not accept any "foreign interference" in its "domestic affairs or judicial system".

Tillis is among four Senate Republicans who have said they'd vote with Democrats to oppose Trump's border emergency. John Cornyn, R-Texas, an adviser to Senate GOP leadership, said of the eleventh-hour White House lobbying effort.

Mr al Aiban's comments formed part of the Saudi response during the UN's periodic review in Geneva, where countries offer recommendations to others to improve their human rights record.

The groups commended the committee's chairman Eliot Engel and ranking member Michael McCaul for their statements that were critical of President Donald's Trump administration for ignoring a requirement under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act to provide Congress a report by February 8, determining responsibility for Khashoggi's murder-specifically addressing the role of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman-and whether the administration would impose sanctions.

Three dozen countries, including Turkey, called on Saudi Arabia last week to cooperate with a United Nations -led investigation into the murder of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and critic of the kingdom's rulership.

Eleven men are on trial in Saudi Arabia, accused of involvement in the killing.

"They are entitled to legal council, and they have also been informed of their rights to resort to the services of council during the investigation phase and during the trial", he said.

Agnes Callamard, UN investigator on extrajudicial executions, said that Saudi officials have not responded to requests to cooperate with her investigation into the murder.
