Australia steps up patrols after New Zealand mosque massacre

Police first received reports of the shootings at 1:40 p.m. Friday, local time, when mosques around the world are busiest as Muslims convene for Friday prayers.

The gunman said he was not a member of any organization, acted alone and chose New Zealand to show that even the most remote parts of the world were not free of "mass immigration". Police have not yet described the scale of the shooting but urged people in central Christchurch to stay indoors.

Media later reported that not one but two mosques had been attacked.

Ardern also said that the terrorists chose to attack New Zealand due to its tolerant and welcoming worldview.

30 people died at Al Noor mosque on Dean's Road and there were 10 more fatalities at the Linwood Islamic Centre on Linwood Avenue.

"At this stage, we will not be discussing the offenders' possible motivations or the causes of this incident".

Christchurch was put on lockdown with all schools and council buildings shut and roads closed across the city.

Ms Ardern said the events in Christchurch represented "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence" and acknowledged many of those affected may be migrants and refugees.

"You may have chosen us but we utterly reject and condemn you", she said. It is the second most-populous city in New Zealand behind Auckland and Wellington. "I saw lots of broken glass and bricks on the backside of the mosque", he said.

Spanish Premier Pedro Sanchez said his thoughts were with the victims, families and government of New Zealand after attacks by "fanatics and extremists who want to destroy our societies".

The suspected gunman who killed dozens of people in New Zealand is an Australian "racist eco-fascist" who posted a 74-page manifesto online before the shootings and described Donald Trump as a "symbol of white supremacy". "We are working to have any footage removed", the police tweeted.

British tabloids are sharing videos of a violent terror attack in New Zealand, despite police issuing a plea not to. Police are treating the situation as an ongoing investigation despite the face they're not "actively looking" for any suspects, Bush said.
