Security beefed up in Australia following New Zealand attack

The 28-year-old Australian man accused of yesterday's terror attack that left at least 49 people dead in Christchurch has appeared in court this morning, charged with murder. Tarrant said nothing, entered no plea to the charge and did not apply to have his name withheld. He did not request bail and was taken into custody until his next court appearance which is scheduled for April 5.

Christchurch is a city of about 400,000 residents, still recovering from a massive quake in 2011 that killed 187 people.

The wounded included a two-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, who was in critical condition.

Officers said they were trying to track the auto and described the suspects as white men believed in their 20s.

One man in his late 20s has been arrested and charged with murder, and will appear in court on Saturday.

The attack on the Al Noor and Linwood mosques has been labelled terrorism by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and is thought to be the deadliest attack directed against Muslims in the West in modern times.

At least 49 people were gunned down dead in two mosques in New Zealand.

"It's outrageous, the feeling is outrageous", he said.

Ardern said the victims came from across the Muslim world, with Turkey, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia among the countries rendering consular assistance.

"This is always the biggest fixture on our match calendar and one which our fans look forward to", said Clark, who would have been expecting a crowd of some 20,000. One victim posted a Facebook video from his hospital bed, asking for prayers for himself, his son and daughter.

Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal also tweeted and said, "Pakistan condemns the tragic terrorist incident in New Zealand".

"It means a lot". Ardern labeled the carnage a terrorist attack and has vowed to change the country's gun laws as a result.

The attack has prompted an outpouring of grief and deep shock in this usually peaceful and hospitable country, which prides itself on welcoming refugees fleeing violence or persecution.

Those views were apparent even among the onlookers gathered at Al Noor Mosque. I mean, you're killing people. "Our hearts are breaking for your loss", read one of the notes marked with a string of x-kisses. The minimum legal age to own a gun in New Zealand is 16, or 18 for military-style semi-automatic weapons.

"While work is being done as to the chain of events that lead to both the holding of this gun license and the possession of these weapons, I can tell you one thing right now - our gun laws will change", Ardern told reporters on Saturday.

A fourth person who was detained in the aftermath of the attack was later determined to be an armed bystander who wanted to help police.

"Their intervention may very likely have saved further lives".

Mourners write condolence messages in chalk along the footpaths in Christchurch.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said it took just 36 minutes from the first emergency call at 1.40pm local time (12.40am GMT) before the suspect was in custody.

But for how long must non-white victims be the proverbial canary in the coal mine before Western governments commit to a serious interrogation of how Islamophobia and other forms of racism are being perpetuated?

Ali Soufan, a former high-ranking Federal Bureau of Investigation counter-terrorism agent, warned the West was "in the midst of a surge of right-wing terrorism that has been metastasising in plain sight while generating only a muted response from domestic counter-terrorism authorities".

Tarrant has been described as a suspected white supremacist, based on his social media activity.

Ardern said these issues would be addressed at a cabinet meeting on Monday.
