Steam Link Anywhere lets you stream games from, well, anywhere

PCs, Macs and Linux computers running Steam can now connect to Steam Link devices over the wider internet, instead of being limited to a local network.

The extended Steam Link service (now called Steam Link Anywhere) is currently in early beta, but accessible to all.

It goes without saying that the most crucial requirement for Steam Link Anywhere is a solid network connection. The Steam Link Anywhere update now supports the dedicated (and discontinued) Steam Link hardware, a Rasperry Pi running Steam Link software, and Android devices via the Steam Link app.

The service is free to all who use Steam Link or the Steam Link app, and is now in beta. And then a year ago, Valve made it so you can stream games to your phone-but again, only over your local network.

Steam Link Anywhere is still in its beta stage, but it should provide gamers with relatively decent streaming experience. Pairing instructions will guide users through the process. Your Steam Client also needs to be on the latest beta build, which will be dated March 13 or newer. However, the devices no longer need to be connected to the same network for it to work.

One weird absence from that list is PC to PC support, which feels like an odd omission given you can bounce games that way in your own home. That opens up the possibilities for streaming PC-quality games to just about any device from anywhere a good connection can be found. Steam Link Anywhere is a new service and it greatly expands upon the previous functionality of Steam Link for Android.
