Theresa May to meet Merkel and Macron in push for Brexit extension

On the eve of an emergency EU summit in Brussels, chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said the bloc was ready to grand a delay, but that the duration "has got to be in line with the goal of any such extension".

The Prime Minister, who spent the day holding talks with French president Emmanuel Macron in Paris and German chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, has been making the case for a delay until June 30.

Prime Minister Theresa May is preparing for further talks with the opposition Labour Party as she tries to hammer out a compromise that would avert a damaging no-deal exit from the European Union on Friday. Those negotiations are ongoing.

"We expect finally to have substantial steps in the right direction - so far absolutely nothing has changed", Roth said.

May is hoping the extra time, if granted by European Union leaders, will enable her to finally get a divorce deal through parliament. "We are of course considering an extension, also a longer extension, but it must be linked to very strict criteria", he added, insisting that Britain can't speculate about not participating in the May 23-26 elections for the European Parliament.

Mrs May will report back to MPs on the Brussels summit and seek approval for a revised extension date.

The requirement comes after senior British Brexiteers threatened to be as "difficult as possible" towards Europe if Britain was forced to stay inside the Union against its own will. Suggestions by Jacob Rees-Mogg and Nigel Farage included vetoing the EU budget, obstructing the EU army, and causing trouble in the European Parliament.

Mrs May is asking for an extension only until the end of June, but with the British.

"The prime minister's deal ... has a lot of the very positive attributes that anyone would want in a relationship where we can trade freely with the European Union".

Meanwhile, European Council President Donald Tusk suggested on Tuesday to the members of the European Council to discuss the possibility to put in place a new Brexit extension that will last up to one year.

The passage of the bill represents a significant blow to May's authority, overturning the long-standing convention the government has sole control of the agenda in parliament, allowing it to control what laws are passed.

She has requested a delay to Brexit to 30 June, but said she wants to complete the ratification of withdrawal plans in Britain by 22 May to avoid British participation in European elections.

In a bid to end the deadlock with Labour, the Prime Minister is considering offering MPs a vote on whether to hold a referendum on any deal agreed on Brexit, according to the Daily Telegraph. Our objective is an orderly withdrawal.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on the Government to be more flexible regarding red line issues in the talks.

Labour business spokeswoman Rebecca Long-Bailey said there had not been "any fundamental shift. but we're hopeful that progress will be made".
