17 states from Michigan to Arizona with winter warnings including blizzards, ice

Parts of six states were under blizzard warnings on Wednesday, in an area that included Denver; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Scottsbluff, Nebraska; and Pierre, South Dakota.

Cleveland lucked out and is expected to catch the southern edge of the storm Friday, after it's weakened. The new snowfall on Monday could push that total into third place behind 1955 and 2008, the weather service said Sunday. Last month, three people who suffered medical problems died before ambulances slowed by floodwaters could get to them.

A large area of low pressure in the heart of the country is descending.

"We could see 6 to 12, to 24 inches of snow, winds in excess of 35, even 50 miles per hour", Dean added. He said the winds will start Wednesday during the day and pick up at night, with the highest winds Thursday morning, when the heaviest snow is supposed to fall.

Regional travel is likely to be affected during the storm.

After the storm hits, in South Dakota and Minnesota, rivers will see moderate to major flooding after the snow melts. The storm track will determine the ultimate outcome for us here in the state, and it appears we will remain mostly on the cold side of this storm.

This storm will also bring a dramatic drop in temperatures.

"The system will produce snow over parts of the Northern/Central Rockies onto parts of the Northern Plains that will expand into parts of the Upper Mississippi Valley by Wednesday evening".

While lovely spring temperatures have settled into the Plains and Midwest, folks there shouldn't get used to it.

To the south in parts of Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, the storm will cause high winds, with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 75 miles per hour. Rather, a warm, subtropical air mass and a cold, Arctic air mass crossed paths, creating the ideal conditions for a rare bombogenesis over the Rockies and Great Plains states.

The storm is developing now. CDOT also recommends motorists stay home, but if travel is required, to be prepared with an emergency kit, including water, food and blankets, and to check road conditions via COtrip.org prior to traveling.

However, our confidence is increasing for a swath of heavy snow across parts of the High Plains, northern Plains and upper Midwest from Wednesday through Friday, including parts of Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, far northern Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and northern MI.
