Barr to testify before Senate as Mueller report looms

Still, his remarks give a boost to Trump and his supporters who insist his 2016 campaign was unfairly targeted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

With the goal to discredit what's coming, Trump and his allies have unleashed a series of broadsides against Mueller's team and the Democrats pushing for full release of the final report.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said he appreciated the desire of the Electronic Privacy Information Center to obtain the Mueller report, a document detailing what he described as an "extremely important subject matter to the nation". And Democrats immediately called for Mueller to testify and for his entire 400-page report to be released.

"We've done everything we could for the last weeks and weeks to try to reach an accommodation with the attorney general under which we would see the report and the underlying evidence", Nadler said.

"In rejecting this amendment and supporting the subpoena, you and your fellow Democrats created an untenable but politically convenient situation: force Attorney General William P. Barr to break the law to comply with your subpoena or label him as part of a cover-up if he does not", Collins wrote. "He is the attorney general of the United States".

"I was willing to discuss the historic information of how the report came to me and my decision on (March 24)", Barr said, "but I've already laid out the process that is going forward to release these reports hopefully within a week".

They falsely claimed Mueller had exonerated Trump, painted House Democrats' investigations as partisan overreach and planned to target news outlets and individual reporters they believe promoted the collusion story.

"I haven't seen the referrals yet from Congressman Nunes, but obviously if there is a predicate for an investigation it will be conducted", Barr said.

Specifically, Barr is looking into the standard for opening counterintelligence investigations.

Asked again about spying at the end of the hearing, Barr tempered his tone.

Barr's reference to "spying" may refer to a secret surveillance warrant that the Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained in the fall of 2016 to monitor the communications of former Trump campaign aide Carter Page, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing and has denied being a Russian spy.

The FBI's ultimately successful warrant application to surveil Page, which relied in part on information from British ex-spy Christopher Steele - whose anti-Trump views are now well-documented - cited Page's suspected Russian Federation ties.

Critics of the Russian Federation investigation say the warrant on Page was unjustified and have also seized on anti-Trump text messages sent and received by one of the lead agents involved in investigating whether the Trump campaign was colluding with Russian Federation.
