Com breach allowed hackers to read (some) emails for months

Even if only a small number of users had their email contents breached, not being totally honest about the situation won't have done Microsoft any PR favors, and could see customers question any future statements from the company. Email accounts were then accessed and information including each account's email address, folder names, subject lines, and the other email addresses communicated with could be viewed.

On Saturday TechCrunch reported that Microsoft's Outlook.com web service has been breached for around 3 months, between January and March 2019, after "cybercriminals" managed to acquire the credentials of a customer support rep.

Our notification to the majority of those impacted noted that bad actors would not have had unauthorized access to the content of e-mails or attachments.

The support account would also have only had access to free Outlook.com/Hotmail/MSN-branded accounts, and not to paid Office 365 email.

"Upon awareness of this issue, Microsoft immediately disabled the compromised credentials, prohibiting their use for any further unauthorized access", the company said.

Arsenal's Aubameyang upset by racist abuse in English football
Arsenal are investigating a video circulating on social media purporting to show one of their supporters directing a racist insult at Napoli player Kalidou Koulibaly .

In that notification, Microsoft said that no login credentials were stolen and that the attackers could not read the contents of emails.

Now Motherboard report that the attack was actually much worse than Microsoft admitted, with a source able to offer them evidence such as screenshots which pre-dates Microsoft's confirmation. The company did say that potential hackers could only read full email content for about 6% of affected Outlook users.

"Please be assured that Microsoft takes data protection very seriously and has engaged its internal security and privacy teams in the investigation and resolution of the issue, as well as additional hardening of systems and processes to prevent such recurrence", the email adds.

In response to the breach, Microsoft is warning affected people to watch out for phishing emails, and recommends that people change their password.
