Chief US salesman strikes a deal with Poland

The formal announcement is expected on Wednesday afternoon, when President Donald Trump greets Polish President Andrzej Duda at the White House.

USA officials said the Reaper drones will be used to provide greater intelligence to Poland.

Trump earlier in the day said the increase in US forces in Poland could come at the expense of Germany - whom he criticized for underspending on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation defense and overspending on Russian gas.

Trump said Poland will bear the cost of the additional USA troop deployment and said it would not alter the total number of U.S. troops fanned across Europe.

He also slammed Germany for supposedly not paying enough.

For his part, Mr Duda signed a military pact with the United States committing to buy 32 Lockheed Martin F-35s, a deal sealed with a signing ceremony and a flypast of one of the $90 million fighter jets over the White House, with the two leaders and their wives watching.

This is part of a 2016 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation agreement, made in response to Moscow's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. "It would be no additional troops to Europe", Trump said shortly before reaching the agreement.

However, Trump linked coming troop increases in Poland to Warsaw's efforts to elevate defense expenditures to NATO's benchmark, which calls for dedicating 2% of gross domestic product to military spending.

The 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act pledges the alliance to carry out its collective defense without the "additional permanent stationing of substantial combat forces". There are now around 4,000 USA troops in Poland on a rotational basis.

Trump's decision to increase the USA military presence in Poland was welcomed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. "We're also talking about the already mentioned division headquarters", Duda said. The Polish government will build these projects at no cost to the United States.

The eastern European nations have reached out to the US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for greater protection, worrying that they might be the next target of Russia's military advance.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the June 12 U.S. "And it's unfortunate. No, I hope that Russian Federation and Poland and Germany and everybody is going to get along", Trump said.

The US leader also repeated his previous attacks on Germany for underspending on defence and for building a new gas pipeline with Russian Federation called Nord Stream 2.

Nord Stream 2, leading from Russian Federation to Germany, would double the amount of gas Russian Federation could deliver.
